How To Prepare For Nift Entrance


National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) is the premier institute for fashion design and technology in India. It conducts an annual entrance exam.

 Courses in which candidates can gain admission on basis of scores in NIFT entrance exam 2017 are: Bachelor of Fashion Technology, Bachelor of Design, Master of Fashion Technology, Master of Fashion Management and Master of Fashion Design.

Nature Of Entrance Exam

The written exam for design courses is made of two papers, to be tackled on same day. This is CAT (Creative Ability test) for 3 hours and GAT (General Ability Test) which is for 2 hours.

CAT is a drawing based test while GAT consists of a Multiple Choice Question (MCQ) paper consisting of 150 questions to be tackled in 120 minutes. It comprises of 35 questions of General English, 6 to 8 comprehension passages made of 30 questions, 25 questions of Quantitative Ability, 30 questions of Analytical Reasoning and 30 questions of business domain. No negative marking is applied.

How To Prepare:

GAT paper is composed of academic subjects like math (class X level), reasoning, English language and comprehension. Business domain questions refer to topics like fashion industry awareness, current affairs and General Knowledge.

To tackle academic programs, one can attend classroom contact programs at a reputed, trusted place or via self-study using good books for preparing for the exam found in the market. It is good to consult individual subject books rather than an all in one compendium.

 To tackle CAT, you need to train under professionals who are familiar with the intricacies of the NIFT entrance.

The key is to prepare for the papers keeping in mind the limitation of time. Here are a few topics to prepare as per syllabus:


Tests syntax and grammar. Common topics include antonyms, synonyms, phrases & idioms, cloze test, spot errors, fill in blanks, analogies, sentence correction, one word substitution, ordering paras/sentences and correcting spelling errors. You need to work hard on vocabulary.


Non-verbal and verbal series, directions, decoding/ coding, sitting arrangements, directions, syllogism, clocks, calendar, blood relations, eligibility criteria, dices & cubes, puzzles, graphs etc.


Ratio/proportion, number system, ages, averages, speed/ time, profit and loss, down stream/upstream, cisterns and pipes, trigonometry, compound interest, simple interest, probability, permutation and combination, set theory, mensuration.

Creative Ability Test

Perspective drawing, three dimension concepts, space design, product design, color rendering, human figure, illustration, questions on visual communication such as posters, process drawing and other creative questions. Skills for these can be honed under supervision of personal mentor.

Situation Test

Final step to gain admission in B. Des program is the Situation Test. It is a practical test and carries 20% weightage in the entrance exam.

Candidates are given some material with which they have to create a model. They also have to submit a caption and a brief write-up about their model.

  • Overall presentation
  • Working methodology

Candidates must leave exam hall clean and arrange documents properly. Timeliness and quality of caption and write-up are important.
