Design and art are practical based disciplines. Today, a course in art and design is much sought after in India. The two leading institutes are the National Institute of Design (NID) and National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT).
The head quarters of NID is in Ahmadabad and that of NIFT is in Mumbai whereas their campuses are also found at other locations in India. Both institutes offer Bachelors and Masters program in the field of art and design.
NID conducts courses in Glass and ceramic design, animation film design, Graphic design, Furniture design, Apparel design, Product design, Automobile and transportation design, New media design, Lifestyle Accessory design, Film and video communications, Strategic design management, Textile design, Exhibition design, Toy and game design, Information design, Photography design, Interaction design, Universal design, Retail experience and digital game design.
NID Ahmadabad conducts NEED (National Entrance Exam for Design) at 11 centers across India for the GDPD (Graduate Diploma Program in Design) for 100 seats in the Ahmadabad campus. Eligibility is 10 plus 2 (higher secondary) or equivalents like IB/ICSE etc. For the 2017/ 2018 course, deadline for application was November 2016 and exam was conducted in January 2017. Coaching for nid entrance in delhi is conducted by leading institutes.
The Entrance test evaluates the skills and aptitude for design by conducting a test of creativity, mental ability, communications skill, world view and drawing. Candidates qualifying the entrance test are eligible for the studio test and personal interview.
NIFT entrance exam is held in February in 30 centers across India. There are over 2000 seats in NIFT and its India wide campuses for various design and fashion centric courses. Deadline for application was January 2017 and exam is in February.
For the design program for bachelor’s degree, admission test consists of CAT (Creative Ability Test), GAT (General Ability Test) and Situation Test. Admission to masters and graduate programs is based on the score of the candidate in written test, Group discussion and Personal Interview.
The NIFT exam is an ideal gateway to gain admission in various PG and UG professional courses in fashion design and fashion technology field. In 2017, the NIFT entrance procedure has been revised.
Last date for online registration was 16th January 2017 and exam date is 12th February. Situation test/ Interview/ Group discussion are scheduled for April to May 2017. Results will be out in May end/ June. NIFT counseling is from June 2017.
NIFT offers several PG/ UG level courses in field of fashion technology. Post graduate courses are M.F.M., M.F. Tech and M.Des. Undergraduate courses are B.F. Tech and B. Des. The NIFT entrance preparation must consider the following format.
The mode of exam is as follows: Entrance exam will be in offline mode (pen and paper). There will be no negative marking. The test is divided into two portions: CAT (Creative Ability Test) and GAT (General Ability Test). GAT will consist of 150 questions for 2 hours. Paper based test is meant for all U.G. and P.G. programs. Online test will be given to candidates for B. F. Tech, M. F. Tech and M.F.M programs.
