National Institute of Design (NID) conducts an entrance exam, which is used for granting admittance to various courses of design in the institute and other institutions.
NID offers admission to those students aspiring for Bachelor of Design (B- Des) and Master of Design (M-Des). Admission is based on performance in NID Design Aptitude Test which is conducted in 2 parts: Prelims and Mains. Many students go in for design entrance exam coaching to tackle this exam.
NID offers admission to areas like Product design, Furniture design, Ceramic and Glass design, Graphic design, Animation film design, Film and video communication, Textile design, Transportation and automobile design, Toy and Game design, Photography design, Apparel design, Lifestyle design, Accessory design, New Media design, Strategic design management, information design, Interaction design, universal design, Design for retail experience and Digital Game design.
Those candidates are eligible for NID entrance who have cleared or will be appearing for qualifying exam as per 10 plus 2 (higher secondary) as per CBSE, ICSE, IB and other equivalent boards. For M. Des, some programs require pass in Bachelor degree in Design, Engineering, Technology or Architecture or recognized Diploma in Design.
The upper limit of age for B. Des is 20 years. This is relaxable by 3 years for Reserved Candidates.
The announcement of admission is published in leading newspapers around end of September and start of October.
Written exam is held in January. Shortlisted candidates are invited for Studio Test and Personal Interview in April. NID entrance exam 2017 was conducted on January 8.
Steps To Gain Entry To NID
- Step 1: Fill up NID entrance exam form for application:
Candidates need to fill up application forms on the official website of the NID. For completing this step successfully, candidates need to fill up application form online after which they are required to upload signature, supporting documents and photograph.
- Step 2: Download admit card:
The admit card/ call letter is sent to the specified e-mail address of the candidate, usually in December. Applicants who do not get their admit card must contact fast the NID Admissions Cell. In case of DAT- Mains exam, call letters are provided in March.
- Step 3: Appear in DAT- Prelims:
The NID entrance exam is conducted in two phases: Prelims and Mains.
DAT-Prelims consist of a written exam comprising objective and subjective questions. It is of 3 hour duration.
- Step 4: check for results of DAT- Prelims:
NID will announce names of those who have qualified for DAT-prelims. They will be given permission to appear for DAT- Mains. Candidates must check results on official NID website by providing details like date of birth, e-mail address, roll number etc.
- Step 5: Appear for DAT- Mains:
Candidates who passed DAT prelims need to appear for DAT- Mains to gain final admission. This consists of a Studio Test followed by Personal Interview in the NID campus. In Studio Test, candidates are given practical hands-own assignments which must be completed in the given time. Only after qualifying this round will candidates proceed to Interview stage.
- Step 6: Check final results:
On basis of performance in DAT exams- prelims and mains, NID prepares its final merit list. Candidates can check final results on official website.
