NIFT (National Institute of Fashion Technology)

Known as one of the pioneer institutes, NIFT brags the position of one of the premier design institute which is affiliated to Government of India.  This Institute is known worldwide for its pioneer courses in management and technology. Its popularity is shown by its presence in some of the known cities of India, including Bangalore, Bhubaneshwar, Bhopal, Chennai, Jodhpur, Gandhinagar, Hyderabad, Kannur, Kangra, Kolkata, New Delhi, Mumbai, Rae Bareli, Patna, and Shillong.

NIFT courses and their duration

The course category at NIFT includes three of the main programs. These are mentioned below-

  1. Bachelor of Design (B.Des): This category includes 6 major courses, namely Fashion Design (FD), Leather Design (LD), Accessory Design (AD). Textile Design (TD), Knitwear Design (KD) and Fashion Communication.
  2. Bachelor of Fashion Technology (B.F.Tech): In this programme, there is only one course available that is Apparel Design. This course is available in the cities including Bangalore, Bhubaneshwar, Chennai, Jodhpur, Gandhinagar, Hyderabad, Kannur, Kangra, Kolkata, New Delhi, Mumbai, and Patna.
  3. Master Programmes: In here, the courses which are available are M.Des (Master of Design), M.F.M (Master of Fashion Management), and M.F.Tech. (Master of Fashion Technology).


How should you proceed for admission in NIFT?

If you have a dream to join NIFT, you will have to understand the admission criteria or more precisely the eligibility criterion. For a brief view, the information is mentioned here below.

Eligibility requirement for the different programmes

To be eligible to enrol in the bachelors’ and masters’ programme, you are supposed to have the required qualification. Let us see the qualification one by one.

  • For the Bachelors Programme in Design (B.Des): To pursue the Bachelors’ degree in Design, the candidates are required to have cleared Senior Secondary (10+2) from Central Board Of Secondary Examinationorthe State Board Of Secondary Examination. Other than this, students havingGeneral Certificate Education (GCE) or diploma in technical education can also apply for the same.
  • For the Bachelors Programme in Technology (B.F.Tech): For the students thinking of pursuing this degree must have cleared 10+2 from a recognized board/ have GCE/ have pass grade in Senior secondary/ diploma in technical education.
  • For the Masters Programme in Management (M.F.M): The student must have an undergraduate degree any recognized university by the law in India or an undergraduate diploma from NIFT/NID.
  • For the Masters Programme in Design (M.Des): To pursue this degree, the applicant must have an undergraduate degree any recognized university by the law in India, or an undergraduate diploma from NIFT/NID, or Diploma in UG Design from NIFT/ NID.
  • For the Masters Programme in Technology (M.F.Tech): For this programme, students are required to have B.Tech for NIFT or any other university and institute recognized by the Law In India.

How will the final merit list be prepared based on the entrance exam?

Students appearing for the entrance exams will be selected based on the merit list formed. The merit list for the different programme will be formed accordingly the marks scored. The weightage of final merit list will be decided as explained below.

  • For B.Des: For the entrance into Bachelor in Design, the students will have to give CAT, GAT and SITUATION TEST. The weightage will be 50%, 30% and 20% simultaneously.
  • For B.F.Tech: For this programme, students will require qualifying the GAT. This will have 100% weightage.
  • For M.Des: To pursue this programme, the students are required to clear the CAT, GAT, and GD/PI.  The percentage of the weightage goes like 40%, 30% and 30%.
  • For M.F.Tech:For this programme, the student will take the test namely GAT and GD/PI. The weightage will be 70% and 30%.
  • For M.F.M:For this programme also, the student will have to take the test namely GAT and GD/PI. The weightage will be 70% and 30%.

The right time to look for the admission notification

The dates of admission notifications may change anytime, though. However, for the safety, you must keep an eye on the ICAD’s notification page. The admission notification generally comes out in the month of October every year.
